The Rhythm & Grace of Kathak Dance -- Workshop

Experience the heritage and technical brilliance of Kathak dance. Elevate your practice, deepen your understanding of Indian classical heritage, and challenge your rhythm.  This free workshop is sponsored by the DanceFlurry Organization (www.danceflurry.org).

Kathak is a major classical dance form of Northern India, characterized by intricate footwork (Tatkar), rapid spins (Chakkars), and expressive storytelling.  This specialized workshop delves deep into the Lucknow and Jaipur lineage, focusing on the synthesis of fluid grace and mathematical precision.

Open to all ages and abilities.  Prior dance experience is recommended but not required.
To register, or for more information contact [email protected] or [email protected].

The event will be structured in two sessions to accommodate different skill levels:
1.  Fundamentals Workshop (90 mins): An introductory session for adults focusing on basic posture, rhythmic footwork, and the history of the art form. No prior experience is necessary. Open to all ages (kids included) and all abilities.
2.  Intermediate Workshop (90 mins): A technical session following the intro class, focusing on complex rhythmic patterns (Tala) and "Abhinaya" (the art of expression) with a choreographic phrase that will be taught to attendees.

Workshop Highlights:

--  Technical Mastery: Intensive focus on posture, alignment, and the execution of lightning-fast Chakkars (spins).
--  Rhythmic Complexities: Understanding Taal (time cycles) and executing intricate footwork variations.
--  Abhinaya & Grace: Cultivating emotional depth through subtle expressions and upper-body fluidity.

Suggested clothing:  Traditionally for Kathak, students wear a kurta (long top or dress)  and leggings or loose workout clothes that show the feet/ankles.

The workshop will be taught by Gaitrie Subyran, Founder and Artistic Director of Devi Performing Arts based in Buffalo, NY. They specialize in artistic and authentic performances, art education, and classes.

The event is free, but registration is strongly encouraged.
