Southern Circuit of Independent Filmmakers: "Minnie Evans: Draw or Die"
Join the City of Hapeville to celebrate the power of local storytelling with the second installment of the Southern Circuit Independent Film Series. The series continues with a free screening of “Minnie Evans: Draw or Die” on Friday, October 16 at the Christ Church & Carriage House in Jess Lucas Y-Teen Park.
Produced and directed by Linda Royal, this captivating one-hour documentary gives voice to the remarkable self-taught artist Minnie Evans through intimate conversations between Evans and photographer Nina Howell Starr. Their recorded discussions from the 60s and 70s, now preserved in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art archives, offer a window into their loving friendship and Minnie’s personal history. The film weaves together her artwork across the decades, archival images, Nina Starr’s black and white photography and the gardens and coastal landscapes that inspired Minnie’s work.
The evening kicks off with a 6 p.m. pre-screening reception featuring live music and food from local partners followed by the 7 p.m. screening. The conversation doesn’t stop when the credits roll – stay after the screening for a live Q&A with the filmmaker.
