African-Americans in the Civil War

Dr. Thomas Ward presents African-Americans in the Civil War on Wednesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. on Zoom While most Americans understand that the Civil War resulted in the abolition of slavery in the U.S., few appreciate the central role that African Americans played in the war. This talk will examine not only the impact that the 200,000 Black soldiers and sailors had on the Union war effort, but also the roles that Black leaders played in shaping war policy, as well as the contributions that African Americans, free and enslaved, North and South, made to the war effort. Dr. Ward is an award-winning historian and Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at Farmingdale State College's (FSC) School of Arts & Sciences. Ward has previously presented several programs for the library, including: "Black Physicians in the Jim Crow South"; "Black POWs in Confederate Prisons"; and "Black Solders in the Korean War." Registration is required. The Zoom link will be sent one hour before the start of the program. This program is sponsored by The Friends of the Englewood Library.
