Join us for a special screening of And a Shot Rang Out, a powerful documentary that tells the story of journalist A.J. Smitherman, a survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre who later became a leading voice in Buffalo as the founder of the Buffalo/Empire Star newspaper.
Following the screening, educator, historian, and community leader Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold—whose research inspired the film—will lead a discussion with filmmaker Tala Harden. Together, they will explore Smitherman’s legacy, the impact of Black journalism, and the enduring importance of preserving local and national history.
