For many in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and across Southwest Florida, Sanibel isn’t just a vacation spot — it’s part of everyday life. Whether for dinner, bike rides, shelling, or family traditions, Sanibel is our escape. Now, those who cherish the island are invited to help restore its natural beauty at the first-ever Green Gala, hosted by Roots in Resilience on Friday, December 20, at 6:00 p.m. at BIG ARTS, 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel.
This inaugural event celebrates an innovative partnership between local citizens and the City of Sanibel to re-green the island’s public spaces. Leading the effort are Sanibel City Council member John Henshaw, Planning Commissioner and On Island owner Kate Sergeant, and a coalition of island advocates working hand-in-hand to restore Causeway Boulevard, the welcoming gateway experienced by millions of Southwest Florida residents and visitors.
Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception with passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by an exclusive screening of On Sanibel: The Hurricane Diaries, the 2025 Fort Myers Film Festival Audience Favorite, which reflects the island’s strength and collective perseverance after Hurricane Ian. The original score of the documentary was composed by Kat Epple, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning composer and flutist, known for her evocative and emotional compositions.
“Every person in Fort Myers has a Sanibel story,” said Henshaw. “This island is part of our regional identity. By restoring the lush beauty of our shared spaces — beginning with the Causeway — we’re inviting everyone who loves Sanibel to play a part in its rebirth.”
