Mastering Middle School: A Workshop
Give your tween the systems that make middle school click.
Middle school asks a lot of kids, fast: seven teachers instead of one, a locker, a planner, and assignments spread across six classes — usually before anyone has actually taught them how to manage it all. Mastering Middle School is a hands-on workshop that finally hands your tween the how, and gives you a front-row seat to help them build it.
This isn't a lecture you sit through while your child stares at the floor. You and your tween work side by side the entire time, building real, usable systems together. By the end, those systems belong to your child — not to you. That shift, from you managing everything to them owning it, is the whole point.
What your tween will build
We focus on the skills that make or break the middle school years — and your tween leaves having actually created each one, not just heard about it:
• A homework and study routine that runs on a repeatable system instead of nightly willpower and reminders.
• A locker and backpack setup that works, so papers stop disappearing and mornings get calmer.
• A simple way to track every teacher, every assignment and due date across all their classes, so "I forgot I had that" becomes rare.
• An easy, low-pressure way to keep talking with you, so you stay connected even after the daily updates from school go quiet.
Every family takes home a workbook
This is the part parents love most. Throughout the session, you fill in a workbook together — your routine, your tracking systems, your plans, in your own words. Keep it and use it all year. When the first big project lands or the November slump hits, the tools are already in your hands. Parents get their portion too, so you both know exactly how the system is meant to run at home.

Who it's for
Mastering Middle School is designed for tweens roughly ages 10–13 — current middle schoolers and the soon-to-be ones — attending together with a parent or caregiver. Whether your child is already thriving and you want to get ahead of the transition, or you're deep in the forgotten-worksheet, project-due-tomorrow season, you'll both leave with tools you can put to work immediately.
Choose the session that fits your family
This listing is for our Englewood session, but you have three ways to join — same hands-on format, same workbook, every time:
• Parker — Friday, July 24. Task Force Community Room. Workshop 5:30–7:00 PM, with doors and Q&A from 5:00 PM and an optional pizza dinner for $10/person.
• Englewood — Thursday, July 23. The Space. Workshop 10:30 AM–12:00 PM, with doors and Q&A from 10:00 AM and optional coffee & breakfast burritos for $5/person.
• Live Virtual — Wednesday, July 29. Join from anywhere. A 90-minute interactive session at 7:00 PM MST — the same workshop, from your own kitchen table.
Pricing
Registration is $99 per parent + middle schooler. Bringing an additional family member to an in-person session is just $25 more. Food add-ons are optional and chosen at registration.
About your guide
The workshop is led by Colleen Yanez, founder of Key Coaching and creator of Mastering Middle School. Colleen helps families across the South Denver area build the organization, planning, follow-through, and self-advocacy skills that schools expect but rarely teach directly. Her approach is warm, practical, and free of jargon — just real tools.
