Since the birth of Western classical music, women who dared to compose have faced systemic barriers to education, publication, performance, and recognition. Many were encouraged to write only “salon” pieces, publish under pseudonyms, or abandon composition altogether. And yet, despite these obstacles, women across centuries and styles produced music of remarkable originality, depth, and expressive power.
Sounds and Sweet Airs honors composers who defied those odds—women whose voices were sidelined or forgotten, and whose music deserves renewed attention. Spanning late Romanticism, early modernism, contemporary classical music, and genre-crossing songwriting, tonight’s program highlights both the diversity of women’s musical expression and the shared resilience behind it.
