DETROIT, MI — For fifteen years, Hug Detroit Day has served as a symbol of hope, unity, compassion, and community throughout the City of Detroit.
What began as a grassroots effort to encourage neighbors to hug one another has grown into one of Detroit's most beloved community celebrations, bringing together families through music, fellowship, education, youth outreach, and acts of kindness.
Founded by Nicole "Sky" Covington Freeman, Sheila Hale (Queen Aduni), and Chief Hawk of Soul Equestrian, Hug Detroit Day was created with one simple mission—to remind Detroit that love, unity, and community still matter.
On Sunday, August 23, 2026, the Hug Detroit Community Collective, in partnership with Woodbridge Pub, Gwen Foxx Entertainment, and The Preservation of Jazz, proudly presents the 15th Annual Hug Detroit Day Celebration at Woodbridge Garden Park, 5169 Trumbull Avenue, Detroit, Michigan.
Theme: Hug Detroit SafeKidsTM
Protect. Connect. Reunite.
As Hug Detroit Day celebrates fifteen years of serving Detroit, this year's event launches the Hug Detroit SafeKidsTM Initiative, a community-driven effort dedicated to increasing child safety awareness while helping families gain access to practical, everyday child safety resources.
The initiative is designed to encourage families to think proactively about child safety—not just during festivals and public events, but every day.
Whether children are walking to school, riding the bus, playing in neighborhood parks, attending church, participating in sports, or spending time with family, Hug Detroit SafeKidsTM seeks to promote education, preparedness, and community awareness.
What Makes Hug Detroit SafeKidsTM Different:
The "Zero-Data" Promise In a digital world where tracking software and online databases can put family privacy at risk,
Hug Detroit SafeKidsTM is introducing a highly secure, "Zero-Data" Privacy Model. We believe that parents—not technology companies or external databases—should hold the keys to their children's vital information.
Our launch event focuses entirely on decentralized family safety.Complete Privacy: No names, photos, or data will ever enter a computer or a digital cloud database through our program.
Instant Parent Empowerment: We teach parents how to organize their own vital information packs right from the safety of home.Rapid Police Response:
By keeping records completely physical and securely in the parent's hands at home, families can instantly hand verified photos, physical stats, and vital records straight to the Detroit Police Department during an emergency to activate local alerts without a single second of data lag or panic
."Our children deserve more than our concern—they deserve our preparation," says Founder Nicole "Sky" Covington Freeman. "Our goal is to bring our community together not only through music and fellowship, but by helping families protect what matters most—our children.
By emphasizing a zero-data model kept entirely in the hands of parents, we are fiercely protecting our families' privacy while maximizing their safety."
