Literacy & Leader Dogs for the Blind


Altrusa International of Green Bay invites you to a fun, interactive and meaningful community program planned for adults and kids alike at the National Railroad Museum! ‘Literacy & Leader Dogs for the Blind on National Pet Day!’ At the National Railroad Museum 2285 South Broadway, Green Bay Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular admission rates apply. Presented by Altrusa International of Green Bay In cooperation with Leader Dogs for the Blind and the Howard-Suamico Lions Club and other wonderful community organizations who care about literacy and assisting with the needs of those individuals who are blind or sight-impaired. On National Pet Day, Saturday, April 11, Altrusa International of Green Bay is celebrating its 92nd year of service to our community by focusing on the role we play in our community to improve literacy, all while spotlighting the good work being done by Leader Dogs for the Blind volunteers who raise pups that will one day begin their life’s mission to bring independence to their blind or sight-impaired persons. Altrusa International of Green Bay is also proud to partner with the Howard-Suamico Lions Club and celebrate their community mission to support Leader Dogs for the Blind and provide support and services to blind and sight-impaired individuals. “This is going to be a really fun and interactive day for adults and young people of all ages, providing an opportunity to learn some new things about your community and how you can make a difference,” said Nancy Barthel, president of Altrusa International of Green Bay. What can you expect? As you arrive, learn more about the literacy mission of Altrusa International of Green Bay and its many community partnerships as we “Lead to a Better Community.” Learn how you can support and join our wonderful organization! The Howard-Suamico Lions Club will be accepting donations of your cell phones, eye glasses and hearing aids to support their mission of care and concern for blind and sight-impaired individuals. They will also accept DEER ANTLERS which are used as chews for Leader Dog Pups in training. Theatre presentations with Leader Dogs and their Puppy Raisers, 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. “Leader Dog for the Blind Storytimes,” 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. Stations around the museum where you can interact with the Leader Dog Pups as you experience and learn more about blindness and sight-impairment. Animal Book Giveaways for children (while supplies last) Dog Safety Coloring Book Giveaway for children (while supplies last). Coloring Station for Kids. Learn how you can become a Reading Coach for Kids” through the Volunteer Center of Brown County – play their literacy game and enjoy a book giveaway (while supplies last). Learn about support and resources available from the Brown County Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Office of the Blind and Sight-Impaired. Learn more about services available through the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Brown County.
