This is the fourth year the AVB Big Band has performed a Sunday afternoon concert in February at the Riverside Ballroom.
“We’re excited to be back at the Riverside,” said Mike Ajango, director of the AVB Community Band and the AVB Big Band. “It’s a wonderful place for a group of friends or family to enjoy an afternoon of great music, perhaps take to the dance floor, all in the historic setting of the Riverside Ballroom.”
Joining the AVB Big Band as vocalist once again this year is April Strom-Johnson, popular local vocalist known for her signature smooth style.
“April makes everything she sings special, whether it be a ballad or swing. We’re so fortunate this fan favorite is performing with us again this year,” said Ajango.
The afternoon of music includes many well-known Big Band selections.
Planned vocals include “Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets),” “Respect,” “‘S Wonderful,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Mack the Knife” and “Bewitched.”
Instrumentals include “Big Noise from Winnetka,” “Superstition,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Tequila.”
As for the rest of the AVB Big Band’s selections — you’ll have to come down to the Riverside Ballroom on Sunday, Feb. 16, to find out what they’ll be!
Members of the AVB Big Band directed by Mike Ajango are: Cindy Swain and Kelly Beno, alto sax; Gary Hassel and Brenda Winkler, tenor sax; Chuck Larscheid, bari sax; Keegan Anderson, bass trombone; Joe Wingerter, Rachel Rabas and Dick Nocenti, trombone; Brent Hussin, Tim Bader, Mike Smits and Chris Forbes, trumpets; Glen Niessner, drums; Jerry Kruse, auxiliary percussion; Paul Oleksy, piano; Russ Nau, guitar; and Josh Patchak, bass.
