Joe Fig: Contemplating Vermeer

On June 6, 2025, the New Britain Museum of American Art opened "Contemplating Vermeer", a major solo exhibition by artist Joe Fig, on view through January 11, 2026. A reception and artist talk will take place on June 12 at 5:30pm. Joe Fig is well-known for his ongoing “Contemplation” series — small, intimate paintings of people looking at historic important artworks at museums and galleries worldwide. Originally shown at the Sarasota Art Museum (2024–2025), "Contemplating Vermeer" is a traveling exhibition featuring 17 paintings that capture an anomalous art world moment— the Rijksmuseum's 2023 blockbuster Johannes Vermeer exhibition—the largest show of the artist's work to date, where demand was so high tickets were reselling online for over $2,000. It was a historic event that Fig—who managed to snag a ticket— chose to capture in paint, offering a fascinating and playfully voyeuristic look at the excitement and interactions between audience and artworks.
