Drive Electric Month

From Sept. 12 to Oct. 12, communities across Hawaiʻi will take part in National Drive Electric Month, a nationwide initiative highlighting the benefits of electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, e-bikes, and more. Electric cars can be more energy efficient, cheaper to own and maintain, help improve air quality in our communities, provide a smoother and quieter driving experience, and can be conveniently charged at home. Hawaiʻi has more than 38,000 registered electric vehicles, representing about 3 percent of all passenger vehicles statewide. Transportation is also the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the islands, making the transition to clean mobility a critical component to achieving Hawaiʻi’s goal of 100 percent renewable electricity by 2045. Free public events are planned on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, Kauaʻi and Maui. Attendees can see the latest models, take test rides and drives when available, and talk with current owners about what it’s like to make the switch to electric. National Drive Electric Month is presented locally by Hawaiʻi EV Association and its island chapters and Ulupono Initiative. Events will feature exhibits, prize drawings, and booths from clean energy companies, utilities, and community groups. Events are scheduled at: · Oʻahu – Saturday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pearlridge Center, Mauka side · Kauaʻi – Saturday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m. to noon at Kukui Grove Shopping Center · Hawaiʻi Island – Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Prince Kūhio Plaza, Hilo · Maui – Saturday, Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College charging station, Kahului At each event, attendees will be able to learn about charging at home and in public, talk with EV owners about real-world costs, range, and maintenance, find out about tax incentives for EVs, e-bikes, chargers, and renewable energy systems, and explore the wide range of benefits of replacing gas-powered vehicles with electric options. National Drive Electric Month is coordinated nationally by Plug In America, the Electric Vehicle Association, Sierra Club, EV Hybrid Noire, and Drive Electric USA.
