Got the family history bug, but not sure where to start? Join us at Mount Horeb’s downtown Driftless Historium (100 S 2nd St) on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at 1:00 p.m., as Historian Kevin Tvedt shares his climb up the family tree with his presentation, “Mount Horeb Genealogy: We’re All Relatives!”
Kevin, who began documenting his lineage at just twelve years old, will share insights gained and tactics learned while conducting decades of family research—from the frustrating roadblocks he hit along the way, to the technology he uses to conduct, organize and share his voluminous and still-ongoing work.
Tvedt grew up in nearby Black Earth and went on to receive an Economics degree from the University of California at Berkely. But even today, his deep family roots in this area makes it a home away from his Los Angeles home. His father, Dr. Lyle Tvedt, was born in Mount Horeb; his paternal grandparents, Roy and Ethel (Luhman) Tvedt lived at 308 Lake Street from 1928 until 1990; and his maternal grandfather Orrin Anderson was a Primrose native. He has local relatives via both his parents, and his genealogy investigations have revealed an astounding network of branches on his Dane County family tree—with connections to the Tvedt, Luhman, Witte, Anderson, Kellesvig, Helgeson, and Finke families, among many others. In fact, we’re pretty sure YOU are related to Kevin, and you just don’t know it yet!
Half-Hour History is a once-a-month midday speaker series featuring engaging presentations on local and regional history. Generously supported by a grant from the Mount Horeb Community Foundation, these FREE programs are open to all and take place at the Driftless Historium at 1:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
NEXT UP: Half-Hour History will return from a summer break on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. with a presentation by author Andrea Nolan about her new book, Lincoln’s Counterfeiter’s: The Wisconsin Gang that Funded the Union and Started the Chicago Mob.
Founded in 1975, the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society operates the Driftless Historium and works to collect, preserve, and share the stories of southwestern Dane County.
