Unearth a Story! Join Oak Creek Public Library in reading over the summer. This all-ages Summer Reading Challenge runs Saturday, June 13 – Saturday, August 15. Upon registration, participants will have their name added to the window mural overlooking Drexel Town Square. After reading for 15 days, participants will receive a prize. Prizes will be available Saturday, June 27 – Saturday, August 15, or while supplies last. Register online starting June 13 by visiting https://oakcreeklibrary.org/src. Participants will receive electronic badges as they reach reading and activity milestones. Even after the main challenge is completed, participants will still be able to continue logging their reading, writing book reviews, and doing activities throughout the summer. Celebrate the start of the Challenge by attending the Summer Reading Kick-Off at the Drexel Town Square Farmers Market on Saturday, June 13. Attendees of all ages will be able to learn more about the Challenge and can grab some swag (while supplies last) at the library’s booth from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Story Time based on this year's theme, "Unearth a Story," will take place at 9:30 a.m. and again at 10:30 a.m. This story time is geared toward children ages 4-8, with an adult, though all ages are welcome. Registration is not required, and attendees should feel free to bring a blanket to sit on. New this year are two very unique programs. Librarians and early childhood professionals can register to attend Music Play is Learning Play with Jim Gill: A Professional Development Workshop for Early Childhood Educators & Librarians held Friday, August 14 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room. Award-winning musician and author Jim Gill celebrates the joy of music and challenges educators to think of music beyond the video screen to take every advantage of musical opportunities to help young children learn. This session will include strategies to promote family and caregiver engagement in programming as well as a discussion connecting the practical activities with the 5 practices of the ALA's Every Child Ready to Read program. Attendees will leave this session inspired to celebrate in the classroom with new songs and playful literacy activities. Registration will be available on the library’s events calendar starting May 4th. Later the same day, everyone is invited to take part in Kids Night at Drexel Town Square for the Summer Reading Finale featuring A Sing-Along & Play-Along Concert with Jim Gill. Get ready to sing, clap, and dance along! Jim Gill’s music invites children, parents, and grandparents to sing, dance, and play together. This concert is geared toward all ages, but please note that children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required. The Summer Reading Challenge, Kick-Off event, and Story Time are sponsored by the Friends of the Oak Creek Public Library. Please note that all programs may be modified, canceled, or postponed due to inclement weather. In the event of changes, updates will be available on the library's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/oakcreeklibrary.
