The Magic Realism of John Wilde

The Magic Realism of John Wilde is a tightly focused exhibition presenting a select group of drawings and paintings spanning from the early 1940s through the end of Wilde’s life in 2006. The exhibition offers an intimate look at works that define Wilde’s vision, technical mastery, and enduring relevance. One of the most distinctive voices associated with American Surrealism, John Wilde (1919-2006) was a master draftsman and a deeply imaginative painter whose work continues to feel strikingly current. His work is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Crystal Bridges Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Milwaukee Art Museum, Museum of Wisconsin Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others. The Magic Realism of John Wilde runs concurrently with the Milwaukee Art Museum's exhibition, Gertrude and Friends: The Wisconsin Magic Realists.
