Deep River: African American Spirituals Reimagined

This special concert event features the performers and music from the 2024 Navona album Deep River: Spirituals’ Cross-Currents, which drew international acclaim for its reintroduction of historical works by Black composers. Monday, March 16, 2026 | Turner Recital Hall | 7:30 p.m. Purchase Tickets: http://blair.live/031626-tix About Alchymy Viols: Alchymy Viols is an historical viol consort based in south-central Indiana, whose mission is to mix viols with other artistic elements to create a music event richer than the sum of its collaborative parts. Directed by Philip Spray, the ensemble’s recent collaborations have included the Indianapolis Early Music Festival bands, Bloomington Early Music, Dana Marsh and the HPI, Haymarket Opera dancers and director Sarah Edgar. Alchymy has drawn on less-likely collaborations as well, with Scottish folk fiddler Tim MacDonald to offer a chamber version of Scotland’s first opera, and with Paul Krasnovsky and Indianapolis’s contemporary music choir Mon Choeur. About Michael Walker II: Celebrated as a brilliant soloist and versatile chamber musician, Michael Walker II has been praised for his “luminous tone, weighted with pathos.” With a passion for celebrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and access within the classical arts, he has distinguished himself as a leading advocate and performer in the field. A dynamic recitalist and soloist, Turner captivates audiences nationwide, spanning a wide range of styles and eras, from the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods to contemporary works. He holds a Master of Music in Early Music Performance Practices from the Historical Performance Institute at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, and other advanced degrees and certificates in business and non-profit fundraising.
