Ash Wednesday at North Scottsdale UMC

North Scottsdale United Methodist Church 11735 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85254, (480) 948-0529 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ash Wednesday Service to Be Held February 18 at North Scottsdale UMC North Scottsdale United Methodist Church invites the community to pause, reflect, and begin the Lenten journey together on Ash Wednesday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m. In the Methodist tradition, this quiet and prayerful service opens the season of Lent—a sacred time for reflection, humility, and renewing our hearts through God’s grace. This year, Lent begins earlier than usual because Easter is a movable feast, unlike Christmas, which is always celebrated on December 25. Easter’s date is set by the lunar calendar and is observed on the first Sunday following the full moon after the spring equinox. Because Easter may fall anytime between late March and late April, the beginning of Lent- and Ash Wednesday- also shifts from year to year. In contrast, Christmastide follows a fixed date and remains the same each year. Ash Wednesday has been observed by Christians for centuries and reflects the church’s longstanding call to honest self-examination and turning toward God. The ashes were traditionally created from the burned palm branches of the previous year’s Palm Sunda to symbolize both human frailty and the enduring mercy of God. As the words are spoken, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” worshipers are invited to remember not only their limits, but also the grace that meets them there. An Ash Wednesday service is intentionally simple and contemplative, shaped by scripture, prayer, music, a brief message, and the imposition of ashes. A pastor gently marks a small cross of ashes on the forehead or hand, offering a tangible reminder of God’s presence and love at the beginning of the Lenten journey. Ash Wednesday officially begins the season of Lent, a 40-day period leading to Easter. In the Methodist tradition, Lent is a time to engage in the means of grace with practices such as prayer, generosity, worship, and acts of compassion to support individuals and communities as they nurture their faith and prepare to celebrate the resurrection. North Scottsdale UMC is dedicated to sharing the love of Christ and fostering a strong, connected faith community. The church offers traditional Sunday services at 10:00 a.m., Bible studies, choir opportunities, and youth activities. Additionally, NSUMC hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including retreats, holiday festivals, Vacation Bible School, book studies, and mission projects.
