Artificial Intelligence & Church Teaching: Does AI Care for Creation?

Exploring the pros and cons of AI. Pope Leo XIV has named Artificial Intelligence [AI] as one of the most important current issues facing the Catholic Church today and is expected to release an encyclical addressing the interconnected challenges that AI presents to the dignity of the person and the integral ecological effects placed on the Earth. Our speaker, theologian Scott Hurd, will examine the initial successes, potential promises, and the very real problems and challenges that the use of of AI presents to God’s creation and its wider implications for society. We'll explore how the evolution of AI can create a lasting positive impact on our planet, while also looking at how unchecked AI development could lead to devastating consequences for Earth and for us. Our smartphones, search engines, and countless labor sectors have utilized some models of AI to provide us goods and services. These technologies (such as machine-learning and large language models) are raising questions about labor ethics and responsible use of technology. Experts are calling the rise of AI the advent of a new industrial revolution. More than 1000 AI data centers now operate nationwide, with hundreds more approved for construction. Data centers power AI that creates accurate climate change models, monitors endangered ecosystems, etc. And yet, many ecological and energy experts warn that AI data centers strain an already taxed power grid and dwindling water supply.
