Becoming the Stories We Tell: Exploring A Franciscan Spirituality of Narrative and Imagination

One of the distinctive characteristics of the Franciscan tradition is its narrative quality. Like Jesus in the Gospels, who preached in parables and used stories to reveal the mission and ministry of God’s reign, the Franciscan theological and spiritual heritage is likewise a storytelling tradition. It draws on narrative, setting, and character to convey the depth and breadth of its charism. This retreat explores the significance of narrative in expressing and passing on the Franciscan spiritual tradition, which requires a robust theology of imagination. We will examine how we can not only tell the Franciscan story eight hundred years after the death of St. Francis of Assisi, but also embody it in ways that respond to the urgent challenges of our time with a constructive spirit of justice, peace, and integrity of creation.
