After the Mayflower: Program Explores Pokanoket–English History

The Bristol Land Conservation Trust (BLCT) will host a special history presentation, After the Mayflower: What Really Happened Between the Pokanokets and the English, on Tuesday, March 24 at 7 p.m. at Mount Hope Farm, 250 Metacom Ave., Bristol. The program will examine the 1621 treaty between Osamequin—known to the English as Massasoit of the Pokanoket Tribe—and Pilgrim Governor John Carver, which led to nearly 40 years of largely peaceful relations between the Pokanokets and English colonists before the outbreak of King Philip’s War in 1675. Dr. David Weed of the Sowams Heritage Area Project will present the colonial perspective, while Pokanoket Tribal Historian Don “Strong Turtle” Brown Jr. will share the Indigenous perspective, offering a fuller understanding of this pivotal moment in local history. Admission is $15 per person, with a $25 family maximum, payable at the door, and free for BLCT members. Light refreshments will be served.
