Burbage Theatre Co concludes its 14th Season with the 21st Century Rhode Island premiere of William Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure,” directed by founding Artistic Director Jeff Church. Rarely produced and fiercely relevant, this gripping drama blends biting comedy, high-stakes intrigue, and moral reckoning into one of Shakespeare’s most thrilling theatrical experiences.
When Duke Vincentio leaves Vienna in the hands of the rigid and self-righteous Angelo, the city is thrown into turmoil. A young man is sentenced to death for an illicit affair, and his sister Isabella—a novice nun—must plead for mercy from a man whose outward virtue masks dangerous hypocrisy. As secrets multiply and disguises take hold, justice becomes a moving target, power reveals its corruption, and mercy emerges as the only force capable of restoring humanity.
Often called Shakespeare’s darkest comedy, “Measure for Measure” is a story of authority and abuse, morality and desire, judgment and forgiveness. It is a play about the systems that govern our lives and the people who wield power within them—sometimes wisely, sometimes recklessly. With razor-sharp wit, explosive confrontations, and moments of surprising humor, Shakespeare pushes his characters to the edge and asks what justice truly looks like when real lives hang in the balance.
This production marks the first professional staging of “Measure for Measure” in Rhode Island in more than three decades, making it a rare opportunity to experience one of Shakespeare’s most compelling and underperformed works brought vividly to life on a local stage.
Audiences will encounter a dynamic ensemble of fourteen actors led by Alison Russo as the fiercely principled Isabella, Trinity Repertory Company member Mauro Hantman as the chillingly controlled Angelo, and acclaimed local professional Steven Liebhauser as the enigmatic Duke Vincentio. Together with a returning creative team responsible for recent acclaimed productions, the company transforms the Wendy Overly Studio Theatre into a bold, immersive world unlike anything audiences have seen at Burbage before.
“Measure for Measure” runs for 15 performances from May 14 through June 7 at the Wendy Overly Studio Theatre, located at 59 Blackstone Avenue in Pawtucket. Preview performances are May 14 and 15, with Opening Night on Saturday, May 16 designated as a Pay-What-You-Will performance, reinforcing Burbage Theatre Co’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and community engagement.
Serious, suspenseful, and unexpectedly funny, “Measure for Measure” delivers the full force of Shakespeare at his most daring—an electrifying conclusion to Season 14 and a theatrical event that demands to be experienced live.
