In honor of Women’s History Month, the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) - Queens’ premier hub for the visual and performing arts - presents the return of its annual program, Strength Courage & Wisdom. The evening will bring together spoken word, storytelling, and dance in a vibrant celebration of the power, resilience, and brilliance of women’s voices.
For this year’s program, acclaimed poet, recording artist, songwriter, activist, and revolutionary Ma’at Mama Ursula Rucker will serve as this year’s special guest performer. A pioneering force in the global music and poetry scene, Rucker has built a decades-long career at the intersection of rhythm and resistance. Known for her fearless lyricism and commanding stage presence, her rich, textured voice has been described as an instrument in its own right - weaving poetry, soul, and social consciousness into performances that resonate long after the final word.
The show will also feature a dynamic roster of artists to include Tracey Irvin, JRose, Paula Ralph Birkett, Devynity, and Janine “Sugah Lyrics” Lyons. Collectively, their voices and artistry will shape an immersive program that blends word, sound, and movement into a powerful tribute to fortitude, creativity, and shared experience.
Curated by JCAL Director of Program Operations Wendy Arimah Berot, the annual presentation uplifts, provokes, and inspires through dynamic language and performance. Designed as both celebration and affirmation, Strength Courage & Wisdom creates space for artistry, reflection, and community - honoring the strength, courage, and wisdom of women past, present, and future.
