Gabriel's story is about people — it’s an adventure, not a textbook. This is a theatrical experience that draws its strength from history, but its heartbeat from the energy of live performance.
An official program of the Virginia 250 Commission (VA250), the inspiring new musical brings to life the people who fought for freedom right here in Richmond. Through the power of live performance, experience the true story you were never told.
Gabriel’s Rebellion was planned in and around Richmond in 1800. Born in 1776, Gabriel was a literate, enslaved blacksmith who was inspired by the same call to freedom as the more widely known heroes of the American Revolution. Through his actions and call to conscience, Gabriel became a powerful force for social justice.
Directed by Foster Solomon with choreography by Leslie Owens-Harrington, “Gabriel” stars Broadway veteran Jerold Solomon in the title role. The producers, ATLAS Partnership, are working with Ana Edwards, public historian and associate professor in the VCU Department of African American Studies, to provide historical insight and context for “Gabriel.” Dr. Rodney Waller, senior pastor at First African Baptist Church, is the production’s pastoral advisor.
