Arthur Miller’s play Broken Glass is thought-provoking production that explores the emotional impact of global events on personal lives and relationships.
Set in Brooklyn in 1938, Broken Glass follows Sylvia Gellburg, a Jewish woman who mysteriously loses the use of her legs after reading news reports of anti-Jewish violence in Nazi Germany. As doctors struggle to understand her condition, the crisis reveals fractures within her marriage and raises profound questions about identity, fear, and assimilation. Miller’s gripping drama examines how distant events can reverberate deeply within the private lives of ordinary people.
Directed by Rick St. Peter, the production features a talented cast of Richmond-area performers, including Jeff Clevenger as Philip Gellburg and Sara Heifetz as Sylvia Gellburg, alongside Amber Marie Martinez, Robbie Winston, Amanda Spellman, and Jeff Rathner. Live cello performance by MJ Laskey enhances the emotional landscape of the play.
The creative team includes costume designer Nancy Coles, lighting designer Steven Koehler, scenic designer Rebecka Russo, sound and projection designer Todd A. Schall-Vess, dramaturg Shirley Kagan, and production stage manager RaJahné Fisher. Together, they bring Miller’s intimate and compelling story to life.
