Shalom, Sankofa: Uniting Our Stories

The Weinstein JCC, in collaboration with the Mishpacha Rising Collective, is proud to announce “Shalom, Sankofa: Uniting Our Stories,” Virginia’s first-ever Black Jewish cultural celebration. This historic event marks a dual milestone: the 100th anniversary of Black History Month and the 250th anniversary of the United States. The celebration will take place on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Weinstein JCC, 5403 Monument Ave., offering an immersive experience that explores the intersection of Black-Jewish identity. The event includes music performances, panel discussions, food and more. The event’s theme bridges two powerful traditions. “Shalom” is the Hebrew word for peace and greeting, while “Sankofa” is a symbol from the Akan people of West Africa, meaning “go back and fetch it”—a reminder to look to the past to inform the future. Together, these concepts form the foundation for a day dedicated to unity, remembrance, and community.
