Professional photographer O Truman Holtzclaw will share his skill and talent at a free program sponsored by the Photography Club of Davis on Thursday, June 18, at 7:10pm. The meeting will be held at the City of Davis Redwood Community Building, at 1001 Anderson Road (adjacent to Cesar Chavez Elementary School). All meetings are free and open to the public.
As a serious photographer for 42 years, Truman has perfected the skills to artfully blend his teaching experiences, biology background, and love of nature to create a collection of more than half a million beautiful images. He enjoys most photographic endeavors, including attending and presenting workshops, leading field trips, competing and judging in local and international competitions, and leading commercial photo tours. Additionally, he photographs individuals, special events, weddings, and sporting events.
From the beginning of his photographic exploits, Truman has been fascinated with wide angle lenses and their results. His first wide angle lens was an inexpensive 20mm “Spiratone” lens which brought him much early success in his local camera club and later in Photographic Society of America (PSA) competitions. Today his two favorite lenses are the Sony telephoto 100-400mm and wide angle 12-24mm which he uses with a full-frame Sony a7rV.
Truman recently became an avid user of his cell phone, a Samsung Galaxy S25. He reports that it has “a tremendous optical range of 12mm to 400mm” and notes that it’s very easy to carry around.
He operated his own photography company called “A Beautiful Image” for 16 years after retiring from a 34-year career as a biology teacher. He is past president of the Sierra Camera Club, the Sacramento Audubon Society, and the Gold Rush Chapter of the PSA. Currently he serves as vice president of the Lincoln Hills Photo Club.
A previous park naturalist for the Calaveras Big Trees California state park, Truman has traveled extensively, including to Africa, China, Europe, and Japan. He has traveled throughout the US and Canada—his favorite location for travel is the Western United States.
