Calling Us In: An Invitation to Joy begins at a San Francisco Tenderloin bus stop, where a chorus of neighbors—each carrying the invisible “backpacks” of lived experience—wait for a ride toward healing, belonging, and transformation. From this shared starting point, the performance unfolds as a multidisciplinary journey blending theater, poetry, and movement, rooted in the collective stories of the Tenderloin community.
Through song, humor, vulnerability, and raw storytelling, the piece creates moments of deep connection between performers and audience alike. As these stories emerge, Calling Us In challenges us to imagine a different kind of community—one where no one is invisible, every story matters, and belonging is not something we earn, but something we create together.
