The Ride Ahead - Special Odd Fellows Movie Night

Join us for a special Odd Fellows film night co-hosted by Big Wave Project, a vibrant community hub, empowering adults with intellectual disabilities to access resources, discover opportunities, secure housing, and experience a genuine sense of belonging. About the THE RIDE AHEAD “We created this documentary and our impact campaign so that millions of young adults with disabilities will feel more seen and heard, and find their own mentors.” says Samuel. Watch the trailer: https://youtu.be/oMkdjTW5Zvc?si=vWeCU9CBs882HH74 Samuel is determined to avoid the statistical realities: unemployment, isolation, institutionalization. He seeks out wisdom through conversations with well-known disabled mentors. U.S. national statistics show that, as youth with disabilities (currently estimated at seven million) become adults, educational and economic disparities widen: 40% of adults with disabilities age 18-64 are employed; one in four people with disabilities live in poverty; adults with disabilities are half as likely as adults without disabilities to have a college degree. THE RIDE AHEAD illustrates the compelling power of one person truly determined to live life on his own terms as he navigates the barriers before him, while energizing those around him. Together with a loving family and a community of friends, Samuel pushes forth his life’s “ride ahead.” About BIG WAVE PROJECT When adults with intellectual disabilities turn 22, they age out of the school system—and with it, they often lose their daily structure, services, and sense of community. In San Mateo County alone, more than 35,000 adults with special needs face this abrupt transition. Many remain at home, isolated and depressed, while their aging parents struggle to provide lifelong care. As parents grow older, this situation becomes a profound and urgent crisis. Day program waitlists are long, and safe, affordable housing options are extremely limited. The Big Wave Project exists to change this reality. Join us for Q&A following the film with Big Wave Board Member and parent, Julie Shenkman. General Admission Tickets are $20 per person. Proceeds from ticket sales will be shared with Big Wave Project and filmmakers Dan and Samuel Habib.
