As part of the ongoing exhibition SMALLISH: Seattle at Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University's 9th Ave Gallery, we are please to present a special exhibition featuring artist and Cornish staff member, Kyung-jin Kim. Opening Date: July 11, Saturday 1 - 4pm Duration: July 11 - 18 Softening the Blow is a kinetic installation that transforms alarm devices such as sirens, warning beacons, and mechanical knocking mechanisms into slowed and softened signals. These objects are normally designed to demand immediate attention. In this installation they operate slowly and persistently, creating a subdued atmosphere rather than an urgent warning. Bio Kyungjin Kim is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Korea and currently based in Seattle. He received his MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. His work has been exhibited at venues including SOIL Gallery, METHOD Gallery, and The Vestibule Gallery in Seattle; SPAM New Media Festival; Hunter College Thomas Hunter Project Space; Equity Gallery; Gallery MC; the Korean Cultural Center New York; and the Governors Island Art Fair. Kim has participated in residency programs including ACRE, MASS MoCA, Vermont Studio Center, Flux Factory, Sculpture Space, and RU Residency. His work has been supported by the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship, Queens Council on the Arts, Creatives Rebuild New York, 4Culture, and smART Ventures. He is the co-founder of the Jeju Island Artist Collective and organizes international exhibitions, including Smallish, which has been presented in Seoul and Hiroshima, with a Seattle presentation planned for 2026. kyung-jin.com
