The Detention Lottery is an immersive theater experience that tears your attention away from today's headlines and right into the space where our broken system forces decisions that change lives forever.
"ICE agents" prowl the audience and "arrest" participants who portray the detainees in The Detention Lottery. We witness their rushed, desperate conversations with attorneys before entering the courtroom where, as one judge put it, "life-and-death decisions are made in a traffic court setting."
Suitable for middle-school children and older.
Margaret O'Donnell wrote The Detention Lottery in 2018 out of despair that the public was not seeing what she, an immigration attorney, witnessed in the then-closed courtrooms. Practicing immigration attorneys take roles in the performance, keeping the facts and details accurate as only they can.
Dozens of organizations have presented The Detention Lottery to raise awareness, to educate the public, and raise thousands of dollars for immigrant justice projects.
