A young socialite named Gloria (Marilyn Chambers) is abducted from a posh Sausalito hotel and taken to a mysterious club somewhere in San Francisco. There, she’s thrust into performing in a bizarre stage show wherein she’s “loved as she’s never been loved before” by a procession of men and women in front of a masked audience. As those in the crowd work themselves into an erotic frenzy, the lines between performer and spectator soon begin to blur.
Adapted from the anonymous underground story of the same name by filmmakers Artie and Jim Mitchell, BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR is a seminal work of American independent, erotic, and experimental cinema that helped to launch the so-called “porno chic” era of the 1970s.
