Saint Anselm Parish invites the public to “Weeping with the Angels,” a sacred concert of Baroque music offering a profound meditation on the human spirit—its fall, betrayal, judgment, regret, and compassion—revealed through music born of shadow, silence, and prayer.
Presented as Lenten Meditations in Sound, this concert is part of Saint Anselm Parish’s commitment to fostering sacred beauty as an integral dimension of spiritual life. The program centers on two masterworks of the Baroque sacred repertoire: François Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres and Giovanni Felice Sances’s Pianto della Madonna—works originally composed for the most solemn moments of the Church’s liturgical year.
Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres, settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, meditate on the desolation of Jerusalem while inviting repentance, interior silence, and hope in divine mercy. Sances’s Pianto della Madonna gives voice to the Virgin Mary, transforming personal sorrow into a universal prayer of compassion and trust.
The concert features award-winning soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg, joined by Kate Tombaugh, soprano, Ken Kulosa, viola da gamba, and Andrzej Zahorski, organ. Together, the performers bring expressive clarity and spiritual depth to music that continues to speak powerfully across centuries.
