A play for the entire family, “Robbin, from the Hood” is a modern spin on the classic “Robbin Hood” story told through the eyes of two teens living in the inner-city accepted in a summer job program that promises a path towards financial success for them and their families, only to soon realize their new futures may come at greater costs to their community. “Now more than ever is the time for theater to honor its role in revolution and societal change. We don’t need applause. We need an uproar,”
says Cameron Jamarr, Director and Founding Artistic Director of Soul Siren Playhouse.
“This play centers black life and black voices in a light rarely seen on stage. It’s a play for the people, by the people, speaking power to the people. It’s a play for now”
Its creative team includes co-Founder and Director of Operations Bradford Rolen (props, wardrobe, scenic design), Bryant Powell (lighting design), Khadijah Amira (hair and wig design), and Gabriel Vianello (sound engineer), with sound and visual projections also designed by Jamarr. Together, the
team creates a bold yet grounded backdrop for a story he calls “an ode and love letter to St. Louis.”
A play for teens and the entire family, “Robbin, from the Hood” examines American capitalism and its intergenerational effects on three generations of the Woods family. Told with humor, heart, and grit, the production is both an unflinching protest and a wake-up call. Centering family, friendship, and justice, the play asks urgent questions about the choices we make when options are limited and the prices we pay when freedom is at stake.
