This interactive workshop, led by Bradford J. Prestbo, FAIA (architect, author and educator) and David Damon, AIA (Global Higher Education Practice Leader and expert in innovative learning environments at Perkins & Will), explores exercises From Mind to Paper: Enhance Design Thinking Through Drawing. Participants will engage in hands-on exercises drawn directly from the workbook, mastering fundamental to advanced freehand sketching techniques for representing architectural elements, materials, spaces, and concepts. The session emphasizes sketching as an essential tool for sharpening design thinking, fostering creativity, rapid ideation, problem-solving, and effective visual communication. Ideal for architecture students, emerging professionals, faculty, and practitioners, this workshop combines guided drawing activities, real-world precedents, peer feedback, and discussion led by both instructors to help participants confidently translate abstract ideas from mind to paper.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Apply foundational drawing rudiments—including line quality, proportion, perspective, and composition—to produce clear and confident freehand sketches under the direct guidance of the instructors.
2. Accurately represent key architectural elements through structured exercises that build technical proficiency and observational skills.
3. Master hatching, shading, and texturing techniques to effectively convey materials, light, depth, and atmosphere in sketches.
4. Leverage freehand sketching as a dynamic design-thinking tool to brainstorm, iterate, refine concepts, and communicate ideas rapidly and persuasively throughout the design process.
Registrants will receive a copy of Prestbo workbook, "From Mind To Paper: Enhance Design Thinking Through Drawing: Drawing Rudiments on Premium Color and Paper," a design pencil and AIA notebook.
