Pathways to Higher Education with LCPS and Loudoun Laurels

During the Pathway to Higher Education panel discussion the evening of Thursday, May 21, at Cascades Library in Sterling, the Loudoun Laurels Foundation and LCPS will discuss how they collaborate to identify promising students in the AVID and CAMPUS programs and provide scholarship opportunities. Since 2013, the Loudoun Laurels Foundation has awarded two $40,000 scholarships per year to two deserving Loudoun County high school seniors to help defray the cost of attending a four-year Virginia state institution of higher learning. These students usually are the first in their families to attend college and are members of the AVID or CAMPUS programs at LCPS. Scholars who have received Loudoun Laurels scholarships have gone on to earn advanced degrees and are working in fulfilling careers, and your participation in Laurels has helped make that happen. At this event, Dr. Ed Hatrick, a Board member of Loudoun Laurels and former LCPS Superintendent, and Barry Blair, Director of the LCPS AVID program, will give an overview of Loudoun Laurels' mission, eligibility, award amounts, timeline, and application process. They will also discuss how CAMPUS and AVID work, who they serve, and what a student's week-to-week experience looks like. Other topics include: What obstacles do first-gen students most commonly face? What does success look like, and what makes the difference? How can advocates and families extend and reinforce the work these programs do? Where are the gaps?
