Thomas Cole (American, 1801-1848) was a founding member of the Hudson River School, a group of painters who sought to infuse detailed representations of American landscapes with romantic meaning. Cole prepared this study for Youth, the second painting in his Voyage of Life series. This series of four large-scale paintings depicts a guardian angel guiding a man through a sequence of dramatic landscapes, allegorizing the journey of life through Christian themes of death and resurrection.
The Voyage of Life series is in the permanent collection of The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
This original Study for Voyage of Life is on view at Nepenthe Gallery. Join us to learn about this important artwork and artist from Patty Owens, Nepenthe Gallery Curator and former docent at The National Gallery of Art for 40+ years.
