Parking in Chicago during the winter is like Olympic figure skating - both an athletic triumph and a beautiful art. Digging the snow out of the shoulder of the street for a parking spot is hard work, and real Chicagoans claim their spot by putting a chair in the center. This chair (Dibs) prevents anyone from taking their parking spot while they are at work. In this activity, collage together a block based on Romare Bearden’s The Street (1964) using pictures of Chicago buildings from the 1940s- 2020s from the Art Institute’s collection. Look at history from across time and throughout Chicago to build your collage of a block in Chicago, and learn more about how you can be proactive and protect your block from increasing winter flooding. Then, you can get your dibs on the parking spots in your collage from a huge selection of historical chairs at the Art Institute!
