Side Yard Sounds: An Evening of Improvisation
1st set:
Smith/Gabbert/Sowa Trio
Erik Sowa is a Chicago based drummer/percussionist whose musical directions are informed by free improvisation, jazz, ambient/noise, post rock, and afro-beat traditions. In recent years, Erik has collaborated with a wide range of performers of varied musical genres including Extraordinary Popular Delusions, Jeb Bishop, Mai Sugimoto, Thomas Comerford, and Snek Trio. In 2022, Erik released a self-titled solo album of instrumental compositions titled "Cedar Lake Recordings Vol. 1" which was reviewed in Dusted Magazine. Erik also has a solo drum set/percussion album titled "Mossy Alchemy" set to be released on the label Sliptoh Recordings in June of 2026.
Adam Gabbert is a guitar player who focuses mostly on the nylon-string guitar. He has a background in classical guitar and also enjoys learning about other fingerstyle guitar traditions such as blues, folk, and ragtime. He likes to listen to a wide variety of music and can often be found attempting to create some sort of free improvisation. Every now and then, he uses a pick or picks up a flute or some other instrument.
Nathan Erskine Smith is a clarinet/bass clarinetist who is interested in free improvisation, extended techniques, and exploring electronic textures with guitar pedals and synthesizers. In 2024 Nathan released an EP, Fireside Stories, which explores those specific areas. A Detroit native, Nathan now lives and teaches privately in the western suburbs. You can find out more about him (or tag him in pictures) @wiredbassclarinet
2nd set:
Hunsinger/Langdon/Bryerton/Clark Quartet
Robbie Lynn Hunsinger
From recording the "Wooden Prince" with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, playing bluegrass oboe on the John Hartford "Julia Belle" album and playing on the new Greta Van Fleet project, Robbie Lynn Hunsinger is one of the more versatile musicians you will hear. Her chamber music aesthetic polished from years of top notch classical performance, is apparent in her intensely intimate and sensitive approach to improvised music, composition, intermedia performance and interactive installation. Conservatory trained as an oboist, she is now a multi-instrumentalist improvising on Eastern and Western double reeds, single reeds, whistles and avant-fiddle. She led the highly regarded Aoki Hunsinger Jarman Trio album and is co-leader of a new duet album with Tatsu Aoki. She is also a regarded visual artist, puppeteer, creative technologist, presenter and educator in responsive media performance, interactive installation and intermedia composition.
Jack Langdon (b. 1994, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians) is a musician, filmmaker, and writer with concentrations in experimental music, minimalist documentary, and cultural politics.
Jerome Bryerton's artistic expression evolved from years of playing drums in rock, jazz and experimental groups. Performing solo or collaboratively, he's toured and recorded internationally with many notable improvisers. Jerome is also part owner of a large industrial silk screening operation in Chicago.
Chad M. Clark is a Chicago-based guitarist. Immersed in the instrument’s physical properties, his palette is a measure of size, encompassing both finite and infinite magnitudes. From the narrow rasps of strings stretched taut to the creaking breath of the wood itself, the ways in which particular vibrational phenomena contour the subjective experience of time and space permeates Clark’s practice.
