Ghana Flag Raising Ceremony in Celebration of Ghana Republic Day
This historic event marks the first-ever Ghana Flag Raising Ceremony in the City of Chicago and will bring together community leaders, elected officials, families, cultural organizations, and residents from across the Chicagoland area to celebrate Ghanaian heritage, unity, and cultural pride.
Republic Day in Ghana is observed annually on July 1 and commemorates Ghana’s transition to a sovereign republic in 1960. The milestone marked the removal of the British monarch as head of state and the inauguration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as Ghana’s first president. Though no longer recognized as a public holiday in Ghana, Republic Day remains a powerful symbol of freedom, justice, democracy, and national progress.
