A quartet of musicians from the iconic Chicago Symphony Orchestra respond to UChicago Professor Steven Rings’ prompt to explore “Music in Times of Crisis.” This moving and reflective chamber music program explores Jewish composer Leo Smit’s tragically unfinished String Quartet, Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8–dedicated to “the victims of fascism and the war”–and George Crumb’s unconventional work Black Angels, which evokes the ominous sounds of Vietnam War attack helicopters.
