The Gondoliers was the very first production the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company mounted back in 1964. The 2026 version, the company’s 66th production overall, promises to delight all audience members from Savoyard aficionados to light opera novices.
Performances take place at Mandel Hall, 1131 East 57th Street, from March 6 through 8, 2026. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be ordered online at ticketsweb.uchicago.edu, or by calling the Logan Box Office at 773.702.ARTS.
The plot concerns two Venetian brothers, Marco and Giuseppe - possibly the most likable of all the heroes of the Savoy operas – who are happy with their lives as gondoliers and newlyweds when the arrival of a stranger turns their lives upside down. One brother is secretly the heir to a far-off foreign throne--except that nobody knows which is the king and which is a commoner. To complicate matters, the king was married as an infant to a princess, meaning he (whichever brother is king) is now a bigamist to boot. All is wrapped up happily, though, thanks to a trademark Gilbertian twist.
