Dance Theater x 3
Daystar Dance Company, Commotion Dance Theater, and the newly-formed Coffee Stain Dance Theatre each bring their unique spin to movement-based theater. Performances are Wednesday, June 3 through Sunday, June 7 at MuCCC, 142 Atlantic Avenue, Rochester, 14607. Tickets are $10 - $25 and are available in advance at muccc.org and at the door.
Choreographer Laurie MacFarlane says, “These performances show the incredible variety of dance theater, from Daystar’s work rooted in Native American culture; to Commotion’s inventive and engaging dances; to Coffee Stain’s ballet-based children’s theatre. There is truly something for everyone during this week!”
Wed June 3 and Friday June 5 at 7:30 pm Daystar: Contemporary Dance Drama of Indian America under the direction of Rosalie M. Jones. Daystar/Rosalie Jones (Pembina Chippewa) is a nationally-recognized artist who specializes in “native modern dance” as seen through the perspective of ancestry and cultural values. Daystar will present new and repertory works, including "Dances for Joanne,” a music and dance tribute to Oneida singer/songwriter Joanne Shenandoah.
Thurs June 4 and Sat June 6 at 7:30 pm Commotion Dance Theater presents new works by Ruben T. Ornelas and Laurie MacFarlane. Ornelas’ work highlights the music of Mexican and European composers performed live by musicians Kevin Wang, Cynthia Qiyue He, and Esther Rogers Baker. MacFarlane will present a solo set to a story by the late, great John W. Borek, and a trio which features 37 red objects and an original sound score by Dan Farkas.
Sat June 6 at 11 am and 2 pm, and Sun June 7 at 2 pm Coffee Stain Dance Theatre presents “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” In this ballet-based children’s theater, a child is trying to go to sleep and runs into all her favorite nursery rhyme characters, including the itsy-bitsy spider, the three bears, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and many more! Appropriate for ages 4 – 12, this delightful piece will be enjoyed by the entire family.
