Short Story Writing from Beginning to Revision

Over six weeks you’ll write a short story, from blank pages to first draft. By the end of the workshop, you will shape and revise your story into a final product ready to go out into the world. Each meeting will include notes on the genre, suggested reading, plenty of discussion, and tips for the coming week’s writing. Writers will work on their stories between meetings, share updates each week, and receive personalized, constructive feedback. If you have taken this course before and are thinking of returning, you are welcome to! We’ll have a fresh round of suggested readings and new prompts and problems to explore together. Perfect for new writers, this workshop can also serve to re-ignite inspiration and productivity for emerging and established writers. James Whorton Jr. has published three novels, and his short stories and essays have appeared or soon will in magazines including The Oxford American, Longreads, Virginia Quarterly Review, Washington Square Review, Chicago Quarterly Review, Iowa Review, Mississippi Review, SWING, Sewanee Review, and The Southern Review. His essay “An Upset Place” was chosen by Wesley Morris for The Best American Essays 2024. He teaches at SUNY Brockport, where he also runs the Brockport Writers Forum.
