Annual Round and Square Dance at York Central School
Saturday May 2, 2026 7-9:30pm with instructions at 6:30pm
RETSOF, NY —Are you ready to stop scrolling, put your phones down, and pick a partner for the annual Round and Square Dance? Presented by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts (GVCA), this family-friendly evening at York Central School Gymnasium offers a chance to connect through a shared tradition that has been a staple of Western New York life for nearly two centuries. It is the perfect way for neighbors and strangers to come together to “Keep the Arts Alive” on Saturday May 2, 2026.
The event, which runs from 7:00 to 9:30 pm, features Kelly’s Old Timers, WNY’s longest-running dance band now in their 76th year. Founded in 1950 by Woody and Roger Kelly, the group is now led by the sons of its founders, Doug and Eric Kelly, and includes third-generation member Elise Kelly. Elise plays guitar, sings, and performs as one of three dance callers. She was a recent recipient of a New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Apprenticeship grant and spent 2024 studying the art of dance calling under the mentorship of her elders, ensuring this regional tradition remains vibrant for the next generation.
“As an educator, I see how music and dance connect people of all ages and abilities,” said Elise. “It’s truly a universal language that everyone can partake in.”
Callers will feature the "Eastern style" of round and square dancing which is designed to be accessible and easy to follow. Attendees don’t need a partner, prior knowledge, or special outfits, everyday clothing is perfectly acceptable.
The focus of the evening is on the joy of community and the fun of participating, even for those who come just to listen to the band’s repertoire of 1920s - 1950s standards and swing music.
“This tradition is all about people coming together to enjoy themselves,” says Karen Canning, Director of GLOW Traditions. “It’s an opportunity for children, parents, and grandparents to share the same floor, learn the steps together, and enjoy an authentic piece of our local culture.”
A basic steps instruction session, led by Jim Kimball, will begin at 6:30pm, just before the main dance kicks off.
