FILM SYNOPSIS: 1h 41m / PG-13 / Satire, Comedy, Holiday
Scrooged relocates A Christmas Carol to bustling New York City and turns Ebeneezer into a bitter, cynical television executive (Bill Murray) who has neglected his family and loved ones to pursue his career. The greed and excess (and grime and rot) of mid-‘80s NYC turns out to be a pretty decent stand-in for the unrestrained and merciless capitalism of Victorian England. And then Bobcat Goldthwait walks into his office with a shotgun and bad intentions; it’s never been more relevant!
It’s somehow more antic and kinetic than the Muppet version, but the same poignant sadness that Murray brings to all his best roles comes out here and grounds the movie in something universal and perennially true.
