Big Picture: Synecdoche, New York (2008)

FILM SYNOPSIS: 2h 4m / R / Drama FILM SYNOPSIS: 2h 4m / R / Drama Synecdoche, New York is Charlie Kaufman’s 2008 semi-psychedelic drama about a stage director (Philip Seymour Hoffman) whose life is falling apart. Unexpectedly getting some good news and a new opportunity, he decides to create a work which requires building out an enormous warehouse into a 1:1 scale model of New York City itself, with a cast who are asked to simply live out their normal lives inside. Every director holds in tension the desire to create a world which they control down to the most minute detail, and the truth that interest and excitement come from the unpredictable input of other people; and so, as his model necessarily expands, the boundaries between what is play and what is life blur. The work becomes a world itself, cut off and twisted but real.
